Canadian Queer Medical Students Association<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JUNE 29, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, we announce the founding of the Canadian Queer Medical Students Association (CQMSA).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, medical schools across Canada have worked independently to support and advocate for their 2SLGBTQIA+ students. Our interest in forming a national queer alliance is to build on the work of these individual programs and collaborate to achieve the following goals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Advocate for the representation and fair treatment of 2SLGBTQIA+ medical learners and physicians<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Advocate for a comprehensive and standardized 2SLGBTQIA+ medical curriculum across Canadian medical schools<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Develop mentorship, shadowing, and networking opportunities for 2SLGBTQIA+ medical learners<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Build resources for 2SLGBTQIA+ medical learners and physicians<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    We are founding this organization during both Pride Month and Indigenous History Month. The designation of a month to honour the history, heritage, diversity, and contributions of Indigenous Persons, and to celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ identities, is important for recognition, visibility, and raising awareness of ongoing inequalities, in medicine and beyond. In alignment with celebrating Indigeneity and diverse gender and sexual identities, we would like to give particular attention to Two-Spirit (2S) people and their unique history in both Indigenous and queer communities across Canada and all of Turtle Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The founding of the CQMSA coincides with a moment of mass action against anti-Black racism across Canada, the United States, and many other countries. As a group, we recognize intersectionality and embrace them any diverse identities that each of us carry. We stand with the Black Lives Matter movement, and given the importance of acts of resistance to the modern queer liberation movement (such as the 1969 Stonewall Riots and the 1981 Operation Soap riots), we affirm the duty to take action against oppression in all its forms. We recognize the ongoing legacy of racism and colonialism in both Canada and the institution of medicine, and affirm our commitment to challenging these paradigms as individuals, as queer organizations at our respective medical schools, and as a national organization of queer medical students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Aujourd\u2019hui, nous annon\u00e7ons l\u2019\u00e9tablissement de l\u2019Association canadienne des \u00e9tudiants 2SLGBTQIA+ en m\u00e9decine (AC\u00c9QM).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pendant des ann\u00e9es, les facult\u00e9s de m\u00e9decine du Canada ont travaill\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on ind\u00e9pendante pour soutenir leurs \u00e9tudiants 2SLGBTQIA+. Notre intention en fondant une alliance nationale des \u00e9tudiant.es 2SLGBTQIA+ est de continuer ce travail de fa\u00e7on collaborative pour atteindre les objectifs suivants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Promouvoir la repr\u00e9sentation et traitement \u00e9quitable des \u00e9tudiant.es en m\u00e9decine, r\u00e9sident.es et m\u00e9decins 2SLGBTQIA+.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Nous battre pour un curriculum 2SLGBTQIA+ standardis\u00e9 et compr\u00e9hensif \u00e0 travers toutes \u00e9coles de m\u00e9decine au Canada.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. D\u00e9velopper des opportunit\u00e9s de mentorat, observation et r\u00e9seautage pour les \u00e9tudiant.es en m\u00e9decine 2SLGBTQIA+.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. \u00c9tablir des ressources pour les \u00e9tudiant.es et m\u00e9decins 2SLGBTQIA+.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Nous avons \u00e9tabli cette organisation en juin 2020, le Mois de la fiert\u00e9 et le Mois de l\u2019histoire autochtone. La d\u00e9signation d\u2019un mois pour honorer l\u2019histoire, l\u2019h\u00e9ritage, la diversit\u00e9 et les contributions des Premi\u00e8res Nations, Inuit et M\u00e9tis, ainsi que pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer les identit\u00e9s 2SLGBTQIA+ est important pour que les in\u00e9galit\u00e9s en m\u00e9decine et ailleurs soient reconnues. En c\u00e9l\u00e9brant les identit\u00e9s autochtones et diverses identit\u00e9s de genre et de sexualit\u00e9, nous aimerions donner une attention particuli\u00e8re aux individus bispirituels (2S) et leurs histoires au sein des communaut\u00e9s autochtones \u00e0 travers de Turtle Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      L\u2019\u00e9tablissement de l\u2019AC\u00c9QM co\u00efncide aussi avec un moment d\u2019action contre le racisme \u00e0 travers le Canada, les \u00c9tats-Unis, et plusieurs autres pays. Nous reconnaissons l\u2019importance de l\u2019intersectionnalit\u00e9 et acceptons avec joie les identit\u00e9s diverses qui nous forment. On est en solidarit\u00e9 avec le mouvement de Black Lives Matter. Nous avons vu l\u2019importance des actes de r\u00e9sistance dans l\u2019histoire moderne de la communaut\u00e9 2SLGBTQIA+, tel que l\u2019\u00e9meute de Stonewall en 1969 et les \u00e9meutes d\u2019Operation Soap de 1981, donc nous affirmons le devoir de combattre l\u2019oppression dans toutes ses manifestations.
